Social Skills Groups
It’s the little things that make life easy: things like saying “please” or “excuse me”, sharing and taking turns. Children who are on the autistic spectrum, who have poor communication skills or high anxiety levels find it difficult to learn things that other children pick up quite naturally and quickly. Social skills groups offer major benefits for them. Here, the children can practise their social skills together in a safe, nurturing environment, with an adult to help and guide them.
In social skills groups, children will learn that, while certain behaviours are not wrong, they are more likely to get what they want when they choose to behave differently. So they gradually recognise and use good, positive social interaction and the rewards it can bring – whether that is a smile, praise or permission to play with their preferred toy. It is important to learn these life skills in a friendly setting. Once learned, they will be of use to them throughout their lives and can mean that they will go on to hold down jobs and form meaningful relationships in adulthood.
We can organise social skills groups in schools or in other venues if enough people are interested. We provide all resources and the groups are run by us: qualified and experienced professionals. We ask you to commit to a series of 6 weekly sessions, each lasting 45-50 minutes.
Social skills taught include learning about body language, role-play and practising situations that they need to understand in their daily lives. Adults model appropriate responses and behaviour – and there’s plenty of praise to reward the children. Social skills groups benefit children with a variety of non-verbal disabilities and behavioural challenges and who struggle with communication, including those who have no formal diagnosis.
